Current Water and Sewer Rates

The Water Section issues water meters sized based on anticipated water use. When billed, customers prepay for water use for the next quarter, as well as for any overages from the previous quarter. The prepayment covers a specified amount of water use based on the size of the meter.

Sprinklers and hydrants are billed once a year in April. Sprinkler rates are based on the service line size. Sewer rates are listed at Wastewater's website.

New Water Customers

If a person is purchasing real estate in Bar Harbor, and the building is connected to the public water and/or sewer, the new owner will need to complete a water and sewer application. Typically, the Water Section personnel works ahead of time with the attorney / closing agent handling the transaction. We provide the attorney with the application and final reads for the building. Bar Harbor Water reserves the right to inspect the building to ensure it complies with our terms and conditions. We encourage realtors and closing agents to contact Bar Harbor Water when a building is put on the market.

Bar Harbor Water Construction Specifications

If a person is constructing a new building and wishes to connect to the Bar Harbor water, please contact the Water Section (call 1-207-288-3555 or email water@barharbormaine.gov). If the building can be connected to the public water, a contractor will need to construct the water line and coordinate any connections to the water main in the street with the Water Division. Contact the Wastewater Section if requesting a connection to the public sewer system. A plumber will need to install a meter horn, a valve before and after the meter, and backflow device. Once this is complete, the Water Section personnel will perform an inspection before issuing a meter. We require at least 24 hours notice to make an appointment. Read the full construction specifications.

Bar Harbor Water Terms and Conditionsbar-harbor-water-terms-conditions-sm

Our Terms and Conditions spell out the contract between the Bar Harbor Water Section and the customer. These terms are filed with the Maine Public Utilities Commission. Any failure to comply with these terms and conditions may be cause for refusal or discontinuation of service.

Bar Harbor Sewer Discount

Residential water customers may be eligible for a discount on their sewer in their October bill. This program is available for residential customers who live year-round at the address. It is not available for commercial customers, vacation rentals, or customers who use less or no water in the winter. Read more about the program and complete the form.

Back Flow Devices

Backflow devices prevent water from inside a building running backwards through the water meter and into the public water supply. These devices protect the public water from possible contamination from a customer’s service line. We require a double check valve backflow device. Commercial customers must have their backflow devices tested annually by a licensed backflow inspector. Failure to have these devices tested for commercial buildings can result in being disconnected from the public water system. Residential customers who do not have a backflow device installed may be disconnected as well.
