The Bar Harbor Solid Waste Division has an immediate opening for the position of Solid Waste Superintendent. The Superintendent performs all functions necessary to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the Bar Harbor Transfer Station/Recycling Center in compliance with all applicable state solid waste management rules and permits. It is the primary responsibility of the Solid Waste Superintendent to manage and maintain all of the Town's Solid Waste Division activities. The Solid Waste Superintendent reports directly to the Public Works Director, operates the Transfer Station/Recycling Center and manages two staff members. Primary duties of the Superintendent include, but are not limited to: oversight of maintenance and repairs of the Solid Waste Division equipment; maintain all safety equipment in good working order at all times; maintain accurate records of materials collected, transferred and/or shipped; ensure cleanliness of the Recycling Center, Transfer Station and associated equipment and grounds; and coordinate all activities at the Transfer Station/Recycling Center. This management position is also responsible to establish short- and long-range plans; establish and implement short term plans to improve performance; coordinate, schedule, and train the Division work force; keep the Public Works Director advised of all major activities, problems, solutions, recommendations; and perform all other duties assigned by the Public Works Director. The Superintendent is also active in handling/managing the municipal solid waste, recycling, and other materials held at the Transfer Station/Recycling Center.
The successful candidate shall have prior experience working with municipal solid waste and be mechanically inclined, a problem solver, team oriented, and at a minimum have a high school diploma or equivalent; the physical ability to lift 70 pounds; the possession of or ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), and the ability to operate and maintain the heavy equipment used in the day-to-day operations of the Transfer Station/ Recycling Center. The successful candidate shall also have prior management experience, computer skills, ability to plan and schedule day-to-day operations, and a desire for long-term employment.
