Overview
In order to ensure the aesthetic quality of Bar Harbor is preserved, the Town requires a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Design Review Board before many changes to the exterior of buildings, or the addition of a sign can be made. Examples of construction or renovation projects that require a Certificate of Appropriateness include:
Windows & Doors
Exterior Paint Color* - except those colors designated as exempt on the Design Review Board approved color charts, see below.
Siding and Roofing
Exterior Paint Color

Landscape Lighting
*Note- if colors are chosen from the Approved Design Review Board Color Charts then a Design Review Board Certificate of Appropriateness is not required. See the Design Review Board Approved Color Chart for a list of approved colors. Color samples are available for viewing in the Planning Office.

The Design Review Board meets the second Thursday of each month
throughout the year, as well as the fourth Thursday of each month during
the spring and early summer months.
