On August 5th, The Town Council gave approval to Town staff to initiate a rate filing before the PUC for higher water rates. The effective date would be no earlier than January 1st, 2009 with the increase currently projected at approximately 13%. The purpose was to improve the financial position of the Water Division and to enhance its ability to invest in its infrastructure.
The Town has engaged Maine Rural Water Association to package the necessary financial and water volume information to file before the Public Utilities Commission and hold a public hearing. The basis of the costs will be the Water Division budget that was recently passed by the Council on September 2nd. Maine Rural Water is also creating a Cost of Service Study model that will be examined by Town officials to better determine that the water rates are equitably spread between all users, large or small, year round or seasonal.
