Mission

  • The BHFD is located in coastal Maine on Mt Desert Island connected to the mainland with only one bridge. We have ten full time members (1 Chief, 3 Officer/Firefigher/EMTs, 3 Firefighter/EMTs, and 3 Firefighter/Paramedics) and 21 call members. Operating out of one central station and a substation we have two engines, one ladder, 1 pumper/tanker, and three ambulances. Our response area is 45 square miles which includes 34 miles of coastline, 66 miles of road, and 10,156 acres of Acadia National Park. BHFD provides fire suppression, ALS EMS, community education, fire inspection, and code enforcement in our jurisdiction.
  • Although a year round population of Bar Harbor is 4820, the summer population considerably swells to an estimated 18,000. Acadia National Park sees more than 2 million visitors each year. In 2007 90 cruise ships visited our waters bringing between 49 - 3114 of passengers and a crew compliment of between 17 13 1253 with each visit. Not to mention the 4000 rooms for lodging available in Bar Harbor. Bar Harbor also has a seasonal international ferry, The Cat, which can carry a maximum of 750 passengers and 240 cars. The Cat makes numerous trips between Bar Harbor and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia each week.
  • Bar Harbor also is home to the Jackson Laboratory, Hancock County's largest employer, with 1250 employees. The Mt Desert Island Biological lab has an employee base of 37 in the winter increasing to 200 in the spring and summer.  And, during the academic year the College of the Atlantic has 300 students on 35 acres.

Knox Box Rapid Entry System

Knox Box Rapid Entry System

The Knox Box System can save time and money in the event of a fire or medical emergency. Property and lives can be saved by using a Knox Box which allows rapid entry without having to use forceable entry. Emergency access to a patient or to the building on fire, time could make the difference between life & death or the loss of a building and  having that access saves valuable time.
