The BHFD is located in coastal Maine on Mt Desert Island connected to
the mainland with only one bridge. We have ten full time members (1 Chief,
3 Officer/Firefigher/EMTs, 3 Firefighter/EMTs, and 3
Firefighter/Paramedics) and 21 call members. Operating out of one central
station and a substation we have two engines, one ladder, 1
pumper/tanker, and three ambulances. Our response area is 45 square miles
which includes 34 miles of coastline, 66 miles of road, and 10,156 acres
of AcadiaNational Park. BHFD provides fire
suppression, ALS EMS, community education, fire inspection, and code
enforcement in our jurisdiction.
Although a year
round population of Bar Harbor is 4820, the
summer population considerably swells to an estimated 18,000. AcadiaNational Park
sees more than 2 million visitors each year.
Bar Harbor also
is home to the Jackson Laboratory, HancockCounty's largest
employer, with 1250 employees. The Mt Desert Island Biological lab has an
employee base of 37 in the winter increasing to 200 in the spring and
summer.And, during the academic year
the College of the Atlantic has 300 students
on 35 acres.
