Instructions for obtaining a marriage license

Where to apply:

Maine Residents must apply in the town/city where they reside. The license is valid in any community in Maine for a period of 90 days from the date the intentions are filed. Note: For couples who maintain separate Maine residences, they must apply in one of the communities of residence.

Out-of-State Residents must apply in any the town/city in the state of Maine. The license is valid for a ceremony performed in any community in Maine, for a period of 90 days from the date the intentions are filed.

If the bride or groom is a Maine resident, and the fiancé/fiancée resides out-of-state, both bride and groom apply in the town of residence of the Maine resident. The license is valid in any community in Maine for a period of 90 days from the date the intentions are filed.

STEP 1:

Marriage Application/Worksheet

The bride and groom must complete an Intention of Marriage (available for download from this web page) form either in the presence of the Town Clerk or by mail (notarized signatures required).

The completed Intention of Marriage form must be on file in the Office of the Town Clerk where the marriage license is issued. The marriage license is valid for 90 days from the date the intentions are filed.

Record of Social Security Numbers

The bride and groom must file a Record of Social Security Numbers. The social security cards must be shown to the town clerk when picking up the license. This document is not for public inspection.

Filing Fee

The filing fee is $30.00.

Previous Marriage(s)

If either the bride or groom has been previously married, a certified copy of the death or divorce decree, whichever ended the previous marriage, must be presented to the Town Clerk.

STEP 2:

The completed Intention of Marriage and death/divorce decree(s), if applicable, must be forwarded to the municipal clerk. Record of Social Secrity must be presented when picking up the marriage license.

STEP 3:

Both the bride and groom must appear in person at the Town Clerk's Office, prior to the ceremony, to sign the marriage license, and present their social security cards. Couples who file in Bar Harbor may appear in the Town Clerk's Office Monday - Friday 8:30AM - 5:00PM. The office is closed weekends and holidays, no exceptions.

STEP 4:

The marriage license is completed by the officiant legally qualified to perform a marriage in Maine, and signed by two witnesses. The officiant returns the license to the issuing Town Clerk's office for filing. Certified copies are available, through the Town Clerk's Office, by request only. A fee of $10.00 plus $5.00 for each additional copy is required. Those certified copies obtained through the Bar Harbor Town Clerk's Office, please make checks payable to the Town of Bar Harbor. Bride's and groom's names and date of ceremony are required to request certified copies.
